Who we are and what we doCapital
Day School is an independent, co-educational, non-sectarian school serving Central Kentucky children from
three years old through eighth
grades. For over fifty
years, we have not wavered in our mission of providing an enriched
and accelerated curriculum for our students in a positive and safe
environment. The
school is a member of the Independent Schools Association of the Central
States. As such, it periodically
undergoes a rigorous review by that body to maintain its accreditation.
As an independent school, Capital Day School
has the freedom to fashion an effective, vibrant curriculum without being limited by the
constraints which
must be observed in public education.
Our students are well prepared to meet the challenges of high
school, college, and beyond Capital
Day School is known for academic excellence, yet that’s not the entire
story. At Capital Day
School we educate the whole child.
Students are taught to think for themselves. Critical thinking, love of learning, and intellectual curiosity
are nurtured and encouraged while the children are also learning respect
for others and how to resolve problems peacefully. Our
students are encouraged and empowered to discover who they are and
what they are capable of being.
They learn to think with both sides of their brains through
a curriculum enriched by art, music, drama, French, and computer science
in addition to our solid core curriculum. Capital
Day School is a non-profit corporation, run by a volunteer board,
with an annual budget in excess of one million dollars.
It is also a community of students, parents, and teachers working
together. Our
families are actively involved with their children’s education.
Parents support the school and are integral to its success
through service on the Parent Council and Board of Trustees, by coaching
sports teams, assisting with academic teams, chaperoning field and
class trips, and providing classroom and office support. Our
teachers are capable and committed.
They enjoy being able to pursue their profession to maximum
effectiveness through our small class sizes, pleasant camaraderie,
and the academic freedom allowed by our independent school status. You
are invited to visit the school to meet us and determine if Capital
Day School is the right place for you and your child.

GovernanceThe board is composed of 15 voting members. Twelve members serve three-year terms, with one third of the terms expiring each June. Additionally there are two one-year terms every year, and a one-year term that is held each year by the parent council president. The immediate past president of the board and the head of school are ex-officio members of the board. Terms begin July 1 and expire June 30. The Trusteeship Committee of the Board makes nominations for the Board of Trustees and trustees are elected at the board’s annual meeting, held in May. Officers of the Board of Trustees are elected by and from its membership at the annual meeting. Officers may serve consecutive terms. The President is encouraged to serve two consecutive terms, if nominated and elected, to provide continuity. Meetings of the Board of Trustees are ordinarily held in the school library on the fourth Thursday of each month at 5:00 p.m. The meetings are open, and parents are invited to attend. If you plan to attend a board meeting, it is advisable to phone the school office to confirm the time and date, as the meeting schedule occasionally changes to accommodate the schedules of the board’s members.
