Preschool

The Capital Day Early Childhood Program offers Preschool classes and Extended Day services for three- and four-year-old children. All Preschool classes meet five days a week from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and are designed to provide a comfortable and creative atmosphere for learning. A developmentally structured curriculum provides challenge without stress through an activity-based program that makes learning fun. Each child is given the tools for building self-confidence, self-discipline and self-esteem.

The Preschool curriculum provides a foundation for social, physical, and educational development. The basic concepts introduced during the three-year-olds class are reinforced and enhanced during the four-year-olds class, with an emphasis on language arts and math skills in preparation for Kindergarten.

The "hands-on" math program introduces concepts and allow students practice through the use of manipulatives. All the standards proposed by the National Council of Mathematics are implimented. Health, science, and social studies concepts are introduced during weekly units. Our "Star of the Week" program helps our children understand the importance of each person's individual uniqueness in a larger society. Physical education, library, and technology classes are taught by teachers who specialize in each of these areas.

Capital Day School offers two additional programs for the Preschool child. The first is PM Preschool, which is offered from 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. During this time, the children have lunch, nap or rest, and are offered the opportunity to practice learned skills and concepts. During this time, students play games, work puzzles, engage in table work, play outdoors, and interact with the teachers. A snack is served daily. The second option offered to Preschool children is Extended Day, which is offered from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for students who remain after regular school hours.

Capital Day School understands that each child is an individual. It is our belief that children learn one step at a time through hands-on participation. The goal of our Early Childhood Program is for each child to learn the basic skills necessary for success in the primary grades as they are challenged to become confident, independent learners. Preschool sets the foundation for learning in a classroom environment.
