Technology
Computers are very useful tools to the students in that they enable them to communicate with others around the world, give them numerous avenues for research, and allow them to organize, analyze, and process information relating to their studies. The main goal of the technology classes is to encourage confidence in an electronic environment and to complement the core curriculum through the use of technology.
Capital Day School views technology as a very important part of its curriculum. All students in Kindergarten through the eighth grade attend the technology classes. Students in Kindergarten through fifth grade attend class twice a week. Kindergarten students practice basic computer skills, terminology, and functions. Students in grades One through Three focus on the development of keyboarding skills. Instructional software is used to development logical decision making skills while reinforcing computer, math, and language arts skills. In the fourth grade, students practice more intensive word processing skills and how to use the internet as a research tool. Fifth grade students focus on PowerPoint presentations and techniques.
The Middle School students attend technology classes four days per week for a twelve week rotation period to gain a more in-depth learning experience. Sixth grade students are introduced to the physical makeup of computer hardware, desktop publications, and spreadsheets. Seventh grade students view and analyze web pages and then create their own. Eighth grade students study program logic and robotics and then construct and program their own robot.
The computer lab is also used for classroom projects, homework, extracurricular activities. For example, Middle School social studies classes research and build presentations for KYA and KUNA events. Eighth grade students also use the lab to design and create the school’s yearbook as an after school class project.
