CAPITAL DAY SCHOOL
MathCounts Program
MathCounts is a national math competition program that combines the leadership and sponsorship of education, business, government, and the technological community for the purpose of encouraging and developing math and science skills in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. The program teaches students to build math and science skills while maintaining a positive attitude toward advanced mathematics. Through the lively and challenging experience of competitions, students learn problem-solving techniques, develop an aptitude for number sense, and understand the application of math in real-world situations.
After several months of coaching, students are selected to compete individually or as part of a team in one of more than 500 written and oral competitions held nationwide. The first competitions are held at the local level in February with winners progressing to state competitions in March. Results at the state level determine the top four individuals and top coach who earn the honor of representing their state or overseas team at the national finals. MathCounts practice is held on Mondays after school. Lindsay Barnes is the sponsor.
The Capital Day School MathCounts team for 2007-2008 consisted of:
Aubrey Reid, Will Davis, Josh Young and Nag Alluri - who competed in the MathCounts Chapter Competition
and
Josh Young - who competed in the MathCounts State Competition - Individual.
