The Capital Day Early Childhood program offers classes for three and four year old children.  All Early Childhood classes meet five days a week from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and are designed to provide a comfortable and creative atmosphere for learning.  A developmentally structured curriculum provides challenge without stress through an activity based program that makes learning fun.  Each child is given the tools for building self-confidence, self-discipline and self-esteem.

The Early Childhood curriculum provides a foundation for social, physical, and educational development.  The basic concepts introduced during the three years old class are reinforced and enhanced during the four years old class with an emphasis on language arts and math skills in preparation for Kindergarten.

Capital Day School offers two additional programs for the Preschool child. The first is PM Preschool which is offered from 12:00 - 3:00 pm. During this time, the children have lunch, nap or rest, and are offered the opportunity to practice or reinforce previously taught concepts. These opportunities include games, puzzles, table work, and interaction with the teachers. The second is Extended Day which is offered from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. for students who remain after regular school hours. A snack is served daily.

The full day Kindergarten offers an academic program of creative learning activities geared to the needs of each child.  Included in the Kindergarten curriculum are language arts, math, science, health, social studies, art, music, physical education, library, French, music, and computer classes.  Reading begins with a strong emphasis on phonics which is enhanced by whole-language activities and sight words.

The "hands-on" math program introduces and practices all concepts through the use of manipulatives and implements all the standards proposed by the National Council of Mathematics.  Health, science, and social studies concepts are introduced  during weekly units.  Our "Star of the Week" program helps our children understand the importance of each person's individual uniqueness in a larger society.  Physical education, library, and computer classes are taught by teachers who specialize in each of these areas.

Capital Day School understands that each child is an individual.  It is our belief that children learn one step at a time through hands-on participation.  The goal of our pre-school program is for each child to learn the basic skills necessary for success in the primary grades.
